A while ago, I did the You Made It Weird podcast with the incredibly kind Pete Holmes.
I don’t often post about such things, and usually never listen back, because it stirs up self-loathing. But Pete is such an extraordinary guy: very funny, with an incredibly generous personality and a wonderful, room-vibrating, heart-warming laugh.
Pete likes to start his interviews by talking about comedy and end them talking about spirituality. He is one of the rare comedians who come from a very religious background. He found his way out, and into an intrigued and intriguing kind of spirituality.
I found this interview curious because of what a total bore I am in the first 45 minutes. Despite Pete’s generosity, I basically come across as a bit of a dick. I think that’s because I don’t really like talking about comedy, and don’t actually know anything about it. And I’m weirdly defensive or something. Dunno.
Anyway, at 45 minutes, talk turns to ethics and humanism, and suddenly the conversation is actually pretty interesting, I think. And although I talk a lot about these subjects, perhaps there’s stuff in it that might be pleasantly provocative for you, and perhaps clarifies my thoughts on stuff. If you’re interested.
So, my advice:
1. Listen from 45mins.
2. Go check out Pete Holmes if you have the chance.

This is a really great podcast. At about 45 minutes, Tim gets into meatier topics. Some of this stuff is really hard to have a conversation about without people’s emotions running high and flying off the handle. I even got called a monster and a demon for trying to talk about this stuff. But the topics are of major importance and we need more dialogue like this. Thanks for having the courage to engage in public discourse about the hard questions.

If the first segment has any flaws it’s Holmes’ apparent antagonism toward his own guest. But the latter, existential dialogue is brilliant and fascinating. A good listen! :)

Somewhere in the middle of this I found myself tearing up with a sense of overwhelming relief that the two of you were saying things I often think. These are ideas I can feel quite alone with. I find so many of the people in my life, intelligence notwithstanding, are so very superstitious or reactive or both. And I don’t have the skill to dialog with them if they are committed to defending a belief instead of examining it. Guess I need to get to get out more often. Looking forward to seeing you in all your shock-headed glory in L.A. In October. Thanks for this.

Sorry Tim, loved the first 45 mins as well (there’s still some new stuff in there and it’s great). I do see what you mean though, you’ve talked the shizz out of your beginnings and your take on comedy in interviews for years, it must get a bit repetitive. Of course you touch on your views regarding “other” subjects often, but in an encounter such as this one that’s not really an interview but more of a dialog, lots of different things come out, and with the interaction between the two of you, it’s a fascinating listen.
And a pleasure to see a blog from you!
